Surfing takes the two hardest problems in sun protection, duration and abrasion, and puts them together at the time of day when ultraviolet is at its strongest. It also does something subtler: it turns sun protection into an inconvenience at exactly the point where an inconvenience gets dropped, which is when the waves are good and everyone else is already out.
This file sets out the conditions plainly and then describes the strategy that actually holds. The short version is that in surfing, textile does the work and the film is reserved for what textile cannot cover.
The conditions, set out plainly

- Continuous. Salt. Repeated immersion of the head on every duckdive and wipeout.

- Present under the wetsuit, and significant during the walk to and from the break.
- Friction
- Very high. Chest and ribs against the deck of the board on every paddle stroke. Wetsuit collar on the neck. Hands on rails.
- Typical duration
- Two to four hours is normal. Sessions are dictated by tide and swell, not by the sun.
- What fails first
- The chest and lower ribs, removed by board contact within minutes. Then the forehead and nose, then the ears.
- Protection strategy
- Textile first, because a film cannot survive board contact. A long sleeved suit or top, a cap or a hood in strong sun, and a heavy, high cling formulation reserved for the face, reapplied on the beach between sessions rather than in the water.
The board is the problem nobody mentions
Paddling puts the chest, the lower ribs and the upper abdomen in direct sliding contact with the deck of the board, with body weight behind it, on every stroke. There is no formulation and no claim that survives this. A film is removed mechanically within the first few minutes of paddling out, and it does not come back.
This matters because it is invisible. The chest is the part of a surfer most people never think about, partly because a wetsuit usually covers it. On a summer day in board shorts, or in a shorty, it is the first place to go and one of the first places to burn. The answer is not a better sunscreen. The answer is a rash vest.
The four places that burn on surfers
Ask around any UK break and the same four sites come up.
- The forehead, because it faces the sky when you are paddling and there is nothing above it.
- The nose and the tops of the cheekbones, because they are prominent, they catch the sun at every angle, and they get wiped constantly.
- The tops of the ears, which almost nobody applies to properly and which are presented to the sun for the entire session.
- The back of the neck, abraded by the wetsuit collar and exposed on every duckdive.
None of these are surprises, and all of them keep happening. The reason is that they are the sites where a normal, pleasant to use product performs worst: it stings the eyes, it runs with sweat, it comes off on the back of a hand. High cling, high pigment formulations exist precisely for this, and the trade off is that they are visible and they feel heavy. That is a trade off, not a flaw. We do not name products and we do not rate them, so what we can say is this: for the face of a surfer, a formulation that stays put and is unpleasant to wear beats a formulation that feels good and is gone by the second hour.

Reflection off white water
A surfer is not sitting on flat water. Breaking waves produce foam, and foam is a considerably stronger reflector of ultraviolet than a calm surface. The World Health Organization's ultraviolet index material sets out approximate reflectance for different surfaces, and sea foam is markedly higher than open water. The practical consequence is that the underside of the chin, the underside of the nose and the inside of the forearms receive ultraviolet from below as well as above. Those are precisely the areas people skip, because they do not feel like sun facing skin. Our file on reflected ultraviolet covers the mechanism.
The strategy
Textile carries the load
A long sleeved rash vest or a summer wetsuit top removes the chest, the shoulders and the arms from the problem entirely. That is not a partial improvement, it is a complete solution for those areas, and it does not degrade over four hours. The film is reserved for the face, ears and hands
Which is a much smaller area, so applying the full quantity is realistic rather than aspirational. Our note on how much to apply explains why quantity is the variable that quietly determines everything else.
The session is split
Two sessions with a beach break between them is a better protection strategy than one continuous four hour session, and it is usually a better surfing strategy too. The break is where reapplication happens.
A hat and sunglasses on the beach
Waiting for the tide is exposure too, and it is exposure people do not count. Eye protection matters here for the same reason it matters on snow: the eye is a UV exposed organ and the standard for sunglasses is a real one. Our note on eye and lip protection sets out what to look for.
What the label will and will not tell you
Very water resistant
What it certifies
That the product was assessed using the same published immersion procedure as a water resistant claim, but over a longer set of immersion periods, and that it met the retention threshold at the end of them. It is a higher bar than water resistant, and it is a real difference in formulation behaviour.
What it does not
It does not certify performance under mechanical abrasion, which is the dominant loss mechanism in surfing, and it does not certify anything at all about board contact, wetsuit friction or wiping your face. Nothing in the immersion procedure involves rubbing. A very water resistant product on the chest of a surfer is removed by the deck of the board, not by the sea.
The gap here is abrasion. Every water resistance claim in the UK and EU rests on an immersion procedure, and no immersion procedure includes rubbing. That is not a scandal, it is a limitation of what a standard can practically test. But it means that in the one sport where abrasion dominates, the most relevant claim on the pack is the least informative one. What is not verifiable
Nobody can tell you how much protection remains on a surfer's face after ninety minutes, because it depends on the formulation, the water, the frequency of duckdives, whether you wiped your eyes, and how much went on in the first place. We publish no such figure and would not trust one that was published. What is verifiable is the standard behind the claim, the quantity you applied, and whether you came in and reapplied. After the session
Surfers accumulate exposure over decades, often without noticing, because a surf session does not feel like sunbathing. The British Association of Dermatologists publishes accessible public information on sunscreen and on skin generally, and it is a sensible reference point.
