This page exists so that a reader can see exactly what a sponsor buys, and exactly what they do not. Publishing the rate card is part of that. A rate negotiated privately is a rate a reader cannot audit.
The principle
A sponsor buys a labelled position. A sponsor does not buy coverage, a mention, a link inside an article, a change to an article, or sight of anything before it is published. Those are not available at any price, and saying so in public is cheaper than being asked repeatedly.
Newsletter sponsor line
One clearly labelled sponsor line per issue, placed after the editorial rather than inside it, written by us to the sponsor's brief and shown to the sponsor before it goes out. It is marked as a sponsor line. It does not appear in the subject line.
| Placement | What it is | What it is not | Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single issue sponsor line | One labelled line after the editorial, written by us to your brief | Not a mention, not a link in an article, not a review | £180 per issue |
| Four issue run | The same line across four consecutive issues | No editorial coverage attaches at any volume | £620 |
| Category exclusivity | No competing sponsor in the same issue | Not exclusivity over editorial subject matter | £60 per issue supplement |
Rates are published rather than negotiated, so that a reader can audit what a sponsor bought. They are reviewed annually and the date of the last revision is in the footer.
Sponsors are not accepted from any business whose marketing makes absolute sun protection claims that would not be permitted under UK labelling, which is a small but non negotiable filter given what this publication is about.
The affiliate disclosure layer
Not currently live. When it is, it will operate under the following restrictions, which are published here in advance so that they can be held against us.
- Affiliate links may only appear in categories assessed against published criteria, such as textiles rated under a recognised ultraviolet protection standard.
- They may never appear against a named sunscreen product, because we do not assess named sunscreen products.
- The criteria for the category are published on the page before any link appears.
- Every page carrying one states it, at the top, in plain words.
- No commercial partner is told in advance that a category is being written.
Paid listings for outdoor and watersports retailers
Planned, not live. If launched, the terms are fixed in advance:
- Alphabetical order, always. There is no ranked tier and there will not be one.
- Disclosed criteria for admission, published before the directory opens.
- Marked as paid on the listing itself, not in a footnote.
- No editorial coverage attaches to a listing, and no listing affects any article.
- Removal on request, and refund pro rata.
What is never for sale
- A mention in an article.
- A link in an article.
- A change to an article, including the removal of a sentence a company dislikes.
- Sight of an article before publication.
- A ranking, a score or a rating, since we do not produce any.
- Display advertising or AdWords, which this publication does not run.
