Everything else on a sunscreen pack is a property of the product. Reapplication is a property of you, and that is why it dominates.
Consider what actually happens over a day outdoors. The factor is fixed at the point of manufacture. The ultraviolet A ratio is fixed. The water resistance category is fixed. The quantity you applied is fixed at the moment you applied it. All four of those are one time settings, and from the instant you step outside every one of them is decaying. The only lever that moves in the other direction, the only action that restores the system, is putting more on.
The arithmetic that changes minds
Take two people. One uses the highest factor available and applies it once, thinly, before leaving the house at nine. The other uses a moderate factor, applies a generous quantity, and reapplies at eleven, at one and at three.
By the middle of the afternoon the first person has almost nothing on their skin. The number on their bottle is irrelevant, because the film that number described is on a towel, a shirt and the inside of a wetsuit. The second person has a known, recent, complete film for the entire day.
The comparison is not close, and it does not depend on any figure we would need to invent. It follows from the mechanism alone: a film that is removed cannot protect, whatever its rating was.
Reapplication clock: The general case, any activity
This rail is deliberately generic. It describes the shape of the problem rather than any measured decay, and no laboratory figure is implied.
Why reapplication does not happen
People know they should. This is not an information deficit. It fails for structural reasons.
It competes with the activity
You went out to swim, ride, walk or work. Stopping to reapply interrupts the thing you came for, and in every conflict between a protective behaviour and the activity itself, the activity wins.
The product is somewhere else
In the car. In the bag on the beach. In the van. The physical distance between a person and their sun protection is the strongest predictor of how often it gets used.
There is no signal
Nothing tells you the film has gone. There is no warning, no sensation, no visible change. The failure is silent and only announces itself hours later.
Hands are wet, cold or busy
Reapplying with wet, cold, sandy or gloved hands is genuinely unpleasant, and the moment passes.
Designing a routine that survives
1. Attach it to something that already happens
The cafe stop on a ride. The summit on a hill day. The transition on a tour. Between races. At the exit from the water. Every conditions file on this site names the natural stop for that activity, because attaching a new behaviour to an existing event is the only reliable way to make it stick.
2. Carry it on your person
Jersey pocket, buoyancy aid pocket, hip belt pocket, boiler suit pocket. Not the bag, not the car.
3. Choose a format you will actually use
A stick for a face in the cold. A small tube for a pocket. Something that opens with one wet hand. We name no products, but format determines use, and use determines protection.
4. Treat removal events as triggers, not the clock
The two hour interval is a maximum. A swim, a towel, a wipe or a change of clothes is an immediate trigger regardless of how long it has been.
5. Reapply before you need it, not when you remember
The right moment is the last stop before the exposure, not the first stop after it.
Reapplication and quantity are the same problem
A thin reapplication is not a reset, it is a gesture. The quantity used in the test method that produced the factor on your pack is considerably more than people apply, which is the subject of our note on how much to apply. When you reapply, apply as if it were the first time. Half a reapplication produces something like half a protection, and you have no way to measure which half.
What the claims have to do with it

What it certifies
A sound piece of public guidance. The NHS and other public bodies advise reapplying regularly, including after swimming, sweating and towel drying, precisely because a single application does not persist. Two hours is a workable default interval for planning purposes.
What it does not
It is not a guarantee that protection is intact for two hours. A swim, a towel or an hour of heavy sweating can remove most of a film in far less time. Treat the interval as a maximum between applications, not as a period of assured cover.
Every water resistance claim is bounded by the immersion periods of the procedure behind it, as our note on what water resistant certifies explains. Beyond those periods the claim has nothing to say. Reapplication is therefore not a hedge against a weak product, it is the intended operating model of the entire category.
Who this matters most for
- Anyone in water, because immersion and towelling both remove film and both happen repeatedly.
- Anyone sweating hard, because sweat lifts the film from underneath and migration is invisible.
- Anyone wearing kit that rubs, because abrasion is uncovered by any claim. See water, sweat and rub resistance.

The first application is a reapplication too
The public guidance to apply twice before going out is usually filed under quantity, and it belongs here as well. The second layer is, in effect, the first reapplication, performed at the only moment in the day when you are indoors, dry, warm handed and not in a hurry. It is the easiest one you will ever do and it sets the level everything else decays from.
What is not verifiable
Nobody can tell you what proportion of a film remains at a given moment, and we publish no such figures. There is no consumer instrument that measures it. That uncertainty is the argument, not a weakness in it: because you cannot know what is left, resetting to a known state is the only rational move.
Where the public guidance sits
The NHS advises applying sunscreen twice before going out and reapplying regularly, including straight after swimming or towel drying. The British Association of Dermatologists publishes similar public guidance. We point at them rather than restating intervals, because their advice is maintained and reviewed and ours would not be.
